WHY DOES MY GARBAGE DISPOSAL SMELL?

Your garbage disposal can smell bad when leftover food and other materials like peels, grease or oil become stuck inside. Food particles can get stuck in the disposal if you don't run it for a long time, and debris build up can lead to unwanted odors coming from your disposal.

To help keep unpleasant odors at bay and your garbage disposal smelling fresh, use a product like affresh® disposal cleaner each month.

HOW DO I CLEAN THE INSIDE OF MY GARBAGE DISPOSAL?

WHAT NOT TO PUT IN A GARBAGE DISPOSAL

When it comes to keeping your garbage disposal in top shape, never put fibrous items such as corn husks, artichokes or celery stalks in your garbage disposal, as they can wrap around the blades and cause blockage.

Additionally, avoid putting chicken bones, lobster or egg shells, fruit pits or other hard items in the garbage disposal, as these items can be rough on a septic tank and may cause damage to your disposer's blades over time.

Finally, do not use toxic chemicals like bleach in a garbage disposal to clean it. Use affresh® disposal cleaner for a safer and more effective cleaning solution.

TIPS FOR PROPERLY USING A GARBAGE DISPOSAL

  • Cut large food pieces into smaller pieces before putting them in the garbage disposal.

  • When disposing of vegetable peels such as potato skins, melon and fruit rinds, avoid grinding large amounts at one time. Instead, gradually feed hard materials in while running the water and the disposer.

  • Do not put items like plastic, glass, china, metal, tin cans, bottle caps, grease, fat, large whole bones, or oyster and clam shells into the disposer. Place these items in the trash.

Never pour grease or oils down your sink as they can clog drains or cause a foul odor in the disposal unit.

  • Run plenty of fresh water through your kitchen sink after using your garbage disposal to flush away any remaining food particles and debris.

  • Regularly clean out the interior of your garbage disposer with products like affresh® disposal cleaner for optimal performance and cleanliness.
