HOW TO WASH TIES
Ties can be the perfect way to finish a dressed-up look, and keeping them clean can help ensure they not only look their best but also last throughout the years. Ties are made from a variety of materials such as silk, wool, polyester, cotton and many others. How to wash a tie will depend on its material. Read on to learn more about how to wash ties as well as tips and tricks for keeping them clean.
SHOULD TIES BE WASHED OR DRY CLEANED?
Ties can be hand washed, machine washed or dry cleaned, depending on the fabric, and then air dried. Silk and wool ties should typically be dry cleaned only, while cotton, linen and knit ties can be machine washed or hand-washed. Always remember to check your tie’s care tag to ensure you use the correct method.
CAN TIES GO IN THE WASHING MACHINE?
Some ties can go in the washing machine, depending on their fabric. If you are going to machine wash, use the gentle cycle, and always check the tie’s care tag beforehand.
CAN TIES GO IN THE DRYER?
Ties should not go in the dryer. Rather, hang dry your ties.
HOW TO WASH NECKTIES AT HOME
Whether you have worn your favorite ties many times and feel they need to be washed, or they have visible stains on them, you want to be careful in caring for them. Follow the steps below to help you wash your ties.
SUPPLIES
Laundry detergent
Basin or sink
Clean napkin or towel
Baking soda
STEP 1: DETERMINE THE FABRIC
The first step to washing your tie is determining what it is made of. Some fabrics can withstand machine and hand washing, while others are dry clean only. Refer to your tie’s care tag to identify its fabric and any special washing instructions. If your tie is wool or silk, it is likely dry clean only. If your tie is cotton or polyester, it can most likely be hand washed or machine washed.
STEP 2: HOW TO TREAT STAINS ON TIES
Just like with most stains, if you act quickly, a stain on a necktie doesn’t have to be permanent. When a stain occurs, immediately blot it with a clean napkin or towel. Do not rub the stain because this can further embed it in the material. If the stain is oil-based or grease, you can use baking soda to help absorb it.
STEP 3: WASH THE TIE
Some ties can be washed on a gentle cycle with cold water in the washing machine. Other ties may require hand washing or you may prefer hand washing to ensure that your tie is not damaged. Fill up a sink or basin with cool or warm water, depending on the care tag’s instructions, and add a very small amount of laundry detergent. Let the tie soak for about ten minutes in the water and then gently move it around to ensure all soils are removed. Rinse it thoroughly.
STEP 4: HANG DRY THE TIE
The final step is to dry your freshly washed tie. First, press the tie with a towel to help remove excess water. Never wring or twist a tie to remove water. Then, air dry the tie.
