HOW TO OPEN A STUCK OVEN DRAWER

Located at the bottom of your range is your oven drawer, most commonly used as an extra storage space for pots, pans and cooking utensils. There may be times when your oven drawer is overfilled and gets stuck. This guide can give you some tips on how to remove a bottom drawer from the oven and how to put the oven drawer back in.

WHAT CAUSES AN OVEN DRAWER TO GET STUCK?

If you use your oven drawer to store oven-safe items like pots and pans, they may cause your oven drawer to jam. If that is not the case, the oven drawer may have come off the rail, causing it to become misaligned with the track.

QUICK SOLUTIONS FOR AN OVEN DRAWER THAT’S STUCK

If you find yourself with a stuck oven drawer, there are two quick solutions. First, you can reconfigure the items in the drawer that are causing the jam. Or, you can try to realign the bottom drawer with its track.

HOW TO OPEN A STUCK OVEN DRAWER

For oven drawers that have become misaligned with their track, check your owner’s manual for a guide on how to realign. If your oven drawer is jammed with items, follow these steps to help get your oven drawer open. Note that exact techniques and instructions may vary by make and model, so always use your owner’s manual as your ultimate source.

SUPPLIES

STEP 1: TRY TO OPEN THE DRAWER

Begin by trying to jiggle the jammed item loose. Once your oven is completely cool, this can be done by getting a firm hold on the handle of the oven drawer and gently shaking it. Shaking the drawer may be enough to dislodge the jammed item, or you may need to gently push and pull it back and forth to help remove it. If the drawer is still jammed, move on to step two.

STEP 2: USE A LONG SPATULA OR RULER TO LOOSEN ITEM

You can also use a long, thin object like a spatula or ruler to loosen the item. Insert it into the gap between the top of the drawer and the bottom of the oven. Then, move your tool of choice back and forth until you hit whatever is blocking the drawer. Try to move the item or push it down using the spatula or ruler. While doing this, hold the oven drawer handle and gently try to pull open the oven drawer. Continue trying to move the item until you are able to fully open the drawer.

HOW TO PUT YOUR OVEN DRAWER BACK IN

Lift the oven drawer and place the back end inside the oven so the drawer’s top notch is behind the drawer glide. Then, lower the front of the oven drawer so that the edges align with the drawer glide. Slowly push the oven drawer into the range.

If your oven drawer is properly installed, the rear slides on the bottom of the drawer will properly engage the base rails and the drawer will not tip over when items are stored in it. Remember to consult your Owner’s Manual before removing or replacing your oven drawer, as instructions may differ between models.
