HOW TO REMOVE ELECTRIC STOVE BURNERS
Some electric stoves come with removable coils with chrome burner bowls underneath. Burner bowls, also known as drip bowls, are there to catch spills. If you spill or notice the burner bowl has burnt-on food, it may be time to clean it. Read on to learn how to remove stove coils and clean burner bowls.
As always, refer to your model’s user manual for the most detailed instructions to clean your electric stove burners. For questions or concerns about a stovetop that isn’t functioning properly, consult a professional for assistance.
WHY WOULD YOU REMOVE ELECTRIC STOVE BURNERS?
Consider removing electric stove top burners when you need to clean spills or burnt-on food stuck to the burner bowls underneath. When clean, the chrome burner bowls reflect heat back to the cookware. Always remember to only remove the burners after they are turned off and the coil element has completely cooled.
Keep in mind that pots or pans should not extend more than a 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) over the coil element. If cookware is uneven or too large, it can produce excess heat, causing the burner bowl to change color.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REMOVE ELECTRIC STOVE BURNERS TO CLEAN UNDER THEM?
Time spent cleaning your burner bowls can depend on the frequency with which you use your stovetop to prepare meals. It may be easier to clean spills and messes after you’re done cooking a meal and the coil burners have cooled, rather than waiting for another day.
A clean stovetop not only looks good, but also helps keep the coil elements functioning properly.

Steel-wool pad (optional)
STEP 1: TURN OFF CONTROL KNOBS
Before removing or replacing coil elements and burner bowls, make sure they are cool and the control knobs are in the OFF position.
STEP 2: CLEAN COIL ELEMENT
Wipe the coil element with a damp cloth. Do not clean or immerse the coil in water. Any caked-on food particles will generally burn off when the coil is hot.
STEP 3: REMOVE COIL ELEMENT
Remove the coil element by pushing the edge of it toward the receptacle. Gently lift it enough to clear the chrome burner bowl. Pull the coil element straight away from the receptacle to remove. Lift the burner bowl out.
STEP 4: CLEAN BURNER BOWL
Wash the burner bowl in warm, soapy water. (It is not recommended to wash chrome bowls in a dishwasher). A mild abrasive cleaner and a plastic scrubber can typically be used to remove stubborn stains.
For heavily soiled bowls, place an ammonia-soaked paper towel on the stains and allow to soak for a short time, then gently scrub with a plastic scrubber.
STEP 5: CLEAN SURFACE UNDER COOKTOP
Once all the coil elements and burner bowls are removed, the cooktop should lift up to provide easy access for cleaning. Lift the cooktop by both front corners and lock the support into place. The locking mechanism will vary by model. Use a steel-wool pad to deep clean the area. To avoid damage to the range, do not remove the cooktop.
STEP 6: REPLACE COIL ELEMENT
After cleaning, put the burner bowls back in place on the stovetop. Slide the coil element prongs back into the receptacle.
