Choosing reliable appliances: your questions answered

Get answers to frequently asked questions on the lifespan of your appliance, plus tips to help you care for your appliances so they can run for as long as possible.

Maytag® appliances are often built with commercial-grade components and stress-tested to exceed industry standards. Parts from heavy-duty motors to fingerprint resistant stainless steel are engineered for dependability. Plus, Maytag brand offers a 10-year limited parts warranty on most appliances.1

The average appliance lifespan differs between appliances, but depends on appliance care and maintenance, which can help increase your appliance’s longevity.

According to the US Department of Energy, refrigerators last an average of 12 years and a dishwasher to last around 15 years. A microwave is likely to function for about 10 years. On average, a washer lasts about 11 years and a dryer slightly longer, around 14 years. If your range is electric, it may last around 16 years, while a gas range’s life span is about 14 years.

Generally, keeping your appliance clean and only using your appliance for its intended purpose are two of the most important things you can do to help maintain appliance reliability. Be sure to check your owner’s manual or the Owner’s Center for specific tips on how to care for your appliance to help it last.

While there is no explicit data comparing appliance reliability of energy-efficient appliances versus non energy-efficient appliances, energy-efficient appliances use less energy than non energy-efficient appliances.

For example, ENERGY STAR® certified washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than regular washers, while ENERGY STAR® certified refrigerators have high performance features that help the refrigerator operate more efficiently, such as high-efficiency compressors and improved insulation.

Many of Maytag brand’s laundry appliances are built with commercial-grade parts, such as the direct drive motor and stainless steel wash basket. Maytag® commercial-grade residential laundry appliances are also engineered for durability and designed specifically for home use.

These reliable home appliances are engineered with thick, galvanized steel panels, premium bearings that withstand heavy-duty use and a powerful 1/2 horsepower motor.
