Range hood in a bright, airy kitchen

HOW TO CLEAN A RANGE HOOD IN 3 EASY STEPS

Range hoods are the unsung heroes of the kitchen, tirelessly working to help keep your home smoke and odor-free. But over time, this hard work can take a toll, leaving the hood splattered with grease and grime. Use this guide to learn how to clean your range hood to help keep your appliance performing at its best.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CLEAN A RANGE HOOD?

It is important to clean your range hood regularly to help maintain its performance. How often you need to clean it may vary based on use. If you use your hood daily, monthly cleanings are recommended. If you don’t cook often, you can probably get away with cleaning it every three months or so.

If you’re unsure, consult your appliance’s product manual for model-specific recommendations about cleaning and maintenance.

WHAT’S THE BEST CLEANER FOR A RANGE HOOD?

The best cleaner for a range hood depends on the make and model of your appliance. For most hoods, a mixture of hot water and dish soap is sufficient. Because range hoods collect grease, a cleaning solution with a degreasing agent may also be necessary.

For stainless steel range hoods, a stainless steel cleaner like affresh®1 stainless steel brightener will help clean and protect your range hood. Always read the manufacturer's instructions for your model before using any new cleaner.

STEP 1: REMOVE AND CLEAN THE FILTER

Before getting started, make sure the range hood is turned off. Remove the grease filter according to the instructions provided by the appliance owner’s manual. Depending on the type of filter, you can either clean the filter by hand with warm water and soap or in the dishwasher.

If your range hood is non-vented and uses a charcoal filter, you cannot clean it. With normal use, range hood charcoal filters should be replaced every six months. Check your owner’s manual to be sure.

STEP 2: CLEAN THE BOTTOM

The bottom of your range hood collects grease and smoke when you cook, and over time it’ll need a thorough cleaning. Using a non-abrasive sponge and a cleaning solution recommended in your owner’s manual, gently scrub the underside of the range hood. Wipe away the cleaning solution and residual grease with a clean, dry cloth, then repeat as needed.

STEP 3: CLEAN THE EXTERIOR

Using warm, soapy water or an all-purpose cleaner, gently scrub the exterior of your range hood with a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. Never use steel wool or scouring pads as these can scratch the surface of the exterior. Wipe the cleaning product away with a clean, damp cloth, then wipe the surface dry to help prevent water marks.

If you have a stainless steel hood, apply a stainless steel cleaning product and wipe in the direction of the grain.

Once you’ve finished cleaning the exterior, insert the grease filter back into place.
