HOW TO REMOVE URINE STAINS FROM CLOTHES
Accidents happen—whether from kids, pets or others in your care—and when they do, acting quickly can make all the difference. Use this guide to discover practical tips to help remove human or pet urine from clothes, learn cleaning methods and find out how to handle stains on “dry-clean only” garments.
IS IT EASY TO GET URINE STAINS OUT OF CLOTHES?
Removing urine stains from clothes may be a bit trickier than your average spill. That’s because urine can cause discoloration and contains acids that can affect the fibers where it settles. The key to success is acting fast to treat the stain before it has a chance to set.
4 METHODS TO REMOVE PEE STAINS FROM CLOTHES
Cleaning agents and deodorizers like baking soda, oxygen bleach, vinegar and enzyme-based laundry detergent can help get rid of urine stains in clothes. No matter which method you choose, the first step is always the same: Blot up as much of the excess urine as you can using a rag or paper towel.
Dab the area to help avoid spreading the stain. Then rinse the spot with cool water and gently squeeze out the fabric. Once that’s done, you’re ready to move on to one of the treatment methods below. Always check your care tags before trying any of these methods.
1. BAKING SODA
Baking soda can help break down odors and lift stubborn stains. To pretreat with baking soda, fill a tub or basin with a solution of warm water and baking soda, then stir the water to make sure the baking soda is evenly dispersed. Add the stained garment and allow it to soak for 15 minutes. Rinse your clothing thoroughly, then follow the instructions on the care tag for washing. Repeat the process if urine stains linger. Air dry your garment to help avoid setting any lingering stains.
2. OXYGEN BLEACH
Oxygen bleach can work especially well on dried or set-in urine stains. First, check your care tags and spot check your garment on an inconspicuous spot to find out if oxygen bleach discolors the fabric. Apply a small amount of bleach to a corner or seam, allow it to sit for several minutes and check for any discoloration.
Once you’re confident that your garment can be bleached, mix the oxygen-based bleach with cool water, following the package instructions. Soak the garment for at least 30 minutes, then wash it in warm (not hot) water with your regular detergent.
If you still see the stain, try soaking it overnight in the same oxygen bleach solution before rewashing. Keep in mind, while this can help lift discoloration from the stain, it won’t disinfect the fabric. Skip the dryer and opt for air drying instead, since heat can lock in any stains that haven’t fully come out.

3. WHITE VINEGAR
White vinegar is a natural deodorizer, making it a great go-to for tackling strong urine odors and stubborn stains. Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle or bowl, then soak the stained area for 15–30 minutes. After that, rinse the garment thoroughly, as some washers aren’t compatible with vinegar, and wash the garment according to its care tag instructions. Line dry your clothes to prevent the dryer from setting any lingering stains.
4. ENZYME-BASED LAUNDRY DETERGENT
Enzyme-based detergents are specially formulated to help break down tough stains caused by bodily fluids like sweat, blood, urine and body oils. Most of these products come in liquid form and are simple to use. Following the label’s instructions, apply the detergent directly to the stain, then let it sit for about 10–15 minutes (or as recommended). Wash your clothing according to the care tag, then air dry.

HOW DO YOU GET URINE OUT OF DRY CLEAN ONLY CLOTHES?
If your garment says “dry clean only,” don’t try washing it at home, but—depending on the fabric type—you might be able to start pretreatment to help get ahead of the stain. Start by blotting the area gently with a dry white paper towel to absorb any excess urine. Then, depending on whether or not your fabric is compatible (check your care tags), use a clean damp white cloth to lightly sponge the stain and blot again to dry. If you’re not sure if your fabric is compatible, it’s best to let a professional cleaner handle it.
Skip this step if the fabric is silk—delicate fibers can be damaged by even gentle at-home treatment. Whether the stain looks gone or not, be sure to bring the item to a professional cleaner. Urine contains acids that can weaken fabric over time if left untreated.

TIPS FOR REMOVING PEE STAINS
Trying to get human or pet urine out of clothes can be frustrating, especially when accidents stack up. Use the tips below to help guide the process and help work urine stains out of your sheets, clothes, dog blanket, animal clothes and more. And always check your care tags first.
Remember to blot, rather than rub, the stain. Gentle blotting can help prevent the stain from spreading, but pressing too hard may drive it further into clothing fibers.
Tackle a particularly stubborn, old stain stain by soaking clothes in a vinegar and water mixture overnight, then rinse the item thoroughly before placing it in the washer in the morning. Repeat if necessary.
Though it’s considered safe for colors, be sure to spot test clothes for colorfastness before using oxygen bleach to treat urine stains. Apply a small portion to an inconspicuous area of the fabric, then check to see if the garment’s color changes before soaking or pretreating the stained area.
