4 Steps to Measure Space Needed for YOUR Washer and Dryer
Finding the optimal fit is fairly simple: just take the measurements of your desired washer and dryer and add appropriate space for things like hoses, clearance and loading. If you don’t have units picked out, you can use the measurements shown below, which are examples based on Maytag® front load washer and dryer models MHW8630H & MED8630H.

Step 1: Settle on a Setup
Decide which washer and dryer setup will work best for your space. Front load laundry pairs can be placed side-by-side, with or without pedestals, or stacked on top of each other. Top load laundry pairs need to be placed side-by-side.

Step 2: Measure Height, Width and Depth of your washer and dryer
Using your washer and dryer dimensions and the additional space considerations as detailed in the next step, determine the total amount of space you’ll need. Measurements shown below are examples based on Maytag® front load washer and dryer models MHW8630H & MED8630H.

Step 3: Consider OTHER WASHER AND DRYER SPACE REQUIREMENTS
LOCATION |
EXTRA SPACE NEEDED |
---|---|
In front of the pair |
EXTRA SPACE NEEDED
Roughly 4 feet for loading and unloading |
Behind the pair |
EXTRA SPACE NEEDED
About 6" for hoses and ventilation |
On each side |
EXTRA SPACE NEEDED
1" between the appliances and on each side to minimize noise |
Above the washer |
EXTRA SPACE NEEDED
At least 2 feet for opening and closing (top load) |
Step 4: Map Out a Path BASED ON WASHER AND DRYER WIDTH
Figure out the best path of entry: from your home entrance, through each hall and any doorway. Then measure the width of those spaces to ensure the unit will make it through.

Finding Your Washer and Dryer Sizes
To determine the exact dimensions of the washer and dryer models you’re interested in, or to see if a particular washer and dryer set is stackable, look up the model number online to review specs or ask your local sales representative for assistance.
